If you thought the apocalypse might signal a bright new beginning for Dark, you should know that Schopenhauer’s “work has been described as an exemplary manifestation of philosophical pessimism.” ( X) When all of the variables are considered together, our actions in a given situation can be considered predetermined and unavoidable. We are ultimately the sum total of our inborn character, experiences, environment and Will. We open with one of Arthur Schopenhauer’s most famous thoughts on Will: there is no free Will because we are unable to control our deepest desires and will always by led by them, no matter how noble our ideals.
